The first thing I thought after reading “Victory Lap,” the first short story in George Saunders’ ten-story collection, was “This is a story that will stick with me for a while.” Saunders chases the threads of thought of three characters as a traumatic moment unfolds. Still obviously found something fun about life and good about people, because otherwise why sometimes stay up so late grading you come in the next day all exhausted, blouse on backward, having messed it up in the early-morning dark, you dear discombobulated thing?Here came a knock on the door. He’d stab himself in the chest.

And in the title story, a stunning meditation on imagination, memory, and loss, a middle-aged cancer patient walks into the woods to commit suicide, only to encounter a troubled young boy who, over the course of a fateful morning, gives the dying man a final chance to recall who he really is. Or you’re driving and there’s this old guy on crutches, and you go, to Mr. Feder, your Driver’s Ed teacher, Should I swerve?

In "Home", a combat-damaged soldier moves back in with his mother and struggles to reconcile the world he left with the one to which he has returned. There are some interesting, clever ideas, but they don't really come off with the kind of style I would expect, and a couple of the stories were actually boring - reminded me a bit of the kind of "wacky" attempt at humour you sometimes see in an Aaron Sorkin teleplay.
